The Academies for Social Entrepreneurship and UCLA’s Division of Social Sciences are pleased to announce our third Social Enterprise Academy, featuring the talents of UCLA’s students, faculty and alumni. The Academy will mentor not-for-profit organizations in developing earned income opportunities that expand their impact and income.
Ten not for profit organizations will be selected. An eight-session workshop series will help participants select the best enterprise idea, conduct market research, AND create a business plan. Students (who will be getting academic credit for the work they perform) will be paired with each organization to go through this curriculum and assist in the venture development process. Our goal is to have each participating non-profit plan and begin to implement a revenue generating venture that strengthens and supports their central mission.
Each organization will also be matched with experienced private sector entrepreneurs who will coach them in preparing for a business plan competition. This “Showcase” event will take place in late May and early June with cash and pro bono prizes of over $30,000.
If your organization would like to participate, please submit a completed application by Monday, November 18th. Selected participants will be notified by December 9th. The program starts in mid-January and completes in early June.
Program Schedule
Most Academy work sessions will be held on Tuesdays evenings, from 6:15 pm to 9:30 pm, on the UCLA campus. Work sessions will feature UCLA faculty and alumni with extensive business experience. The preliminary Business Plan Competition will take place on May 23, 2014 and the final showcase will occur on the afternoon of June 6, 2014.
This Social Enterprise Academy is a six month program. The program combines teamwork, expert training and individualized coaching in a comprehensive approach proven to be effective in building successful new businesses.
